Pharmacological properties
Mechanism of action
Doxycycline interferes with protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes and preventing access of transfer RNA-amino acid complexes to messenger RNA-ribosome complexes. This prevents addition of amino acid to the growing peptides.
These include epigastric distress, nausea and vomiting, photosensitivity and hepatotoxicity.
Doxycycline also causes discolouration of teeth, this is severe in neonates and babies prior to the first dentations hence not advisable for this age group.
Doxycycline is contraindicated in patients having known hypersensitivity to it.
Drug Interactions:
Tetracyclines chelate calcium and iron in the stomach, and their absorption is reduced by the presence of antacids or food.
